For those interested in learning more about packet radio there is a generic tutorial about packet radio on the web at:

http://www.choisser.com/packet/

This mode has been around the amateur community for a number of years and used equipment should be available at a reasonable cost. The internet has overshadowed interest in this mode, especially the packet bulletin boards, but packet remains an excellent option for use by amateurs in emergency communications. There is a digipeater on Sweat Mountain (-146.73) and a node in Jasper (KE4R-7) on the SEDAN Network (145.77). Both provide wide area coverage in our area.
